Fishing Trip in Dubai: Seasons, Spots, Boats and What a Charter Really Costs

Dubai is one of the easier places in the world to go fishing. You board a boat fifteen minutes from your hotel, you are on productive water in under half an hour, and you are back at the marina in time for lunch. No long transfers, no rough crossings, no early-season guesswork — just warm water, a short run offshore and a fair chance of a fish worth photographing.

This guide covers what actually matters when you book: the season, the species, how far out you need to go, how long to stay and what a private charter from Dubai Marina costs.

The short version

• Best months: October to May. Cooler water, calmer mornings, more active fish.
• Best time of day: the first light slot — boarding between 6:00 and 7:00 am.
• Typical trip length: 4 hours inshore, 6 to 8 hours offshore.
• Common catches: kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, hamour (grouper), trevally, cobia and tuna further out.
• What to bring: a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and soft shoes. Everything else comes with the boat.

When to go fishing in Dubai

Fishing here follows water temperature more than anything else.

October to December is the sweet spot. The water has dropped off its summer high, kingfish and queenfish move in close, and the mornings are still and comfortable. If you only have one window, take this one.

January to March brings the best hamour and grouper fishing around wrecks and rocky ground, plus reliable barracuda. Mornings can be genuinely cool on the water, so bring a light layer.

April and May are excellent for pelagic fish before the heat arrives. Trips often run further offshore as the fish spread out.

June to September still produces, but plan around the heat. Go at first light, keep the trip to four hours, and expect to spend more time in the shade of the flybridge than on the bow.

How far out do you need to go?

There are three broad zones, and the one you choose sets both your trip length and your likely catch.

Inshore (20 to 40 minutes out). Around the Palm breakwaters, the artificial reefs and the shallow banks off Jumeirah. Ideal for a 4-hour family trip, light-tackle fishing, and children who want something pulling on the line reasonably often.

Mid-range wrecks and reefs (45 to 75 minutes out). This is where hamour, cobia and bigger barracuda live. Bottom fishing over structure, plus trolling on the way in and out. Best paired with a 6-hour trip.

Offshore (90 minutes plus). Deeper water toward the shipping lanes for tuna and larger pelagics. Trolling-heavy, quieter between bites, and worth it if you want a serious fish rather than a steady stream of small ones. Book 8 hours; anything shorter and you are mostly travelling.

What you can realistically catch

Nobody can promise fish. What an honest operator can tell you is what the boats have been landing that week, and what your chosen trip length makes possible.

Catch-and-release is normal for undersized or out-of-season fish, and UAE size limits are enforced — a good crew will tell you what goes back before you have to ask.

Fishing trip or yacht charter? Both work

A dedicated sport-fishing boat is the right tool if fishing is the whole point: outriggers, rod holders, a live well and a crew who fish every day.

But a large share of our Dubai Marina bookings are something different — a group who want a few hours of fishing built into a wider day on the water. Fish for two or three hours at first light, then swim, eat and cruise the Palm and Atlantis coastline on the way back. You give up a little fishing efficiency and gain a day that suits everyone on board, including the people who came for the swim stop.

If your group is mixed — partners, children, friends who are not anglers — the charter-with-fishing route is almost always the happier choice.

What a charter costs

Our boats are chartered by the hour, and fishing tackle is arranged as an add-on. These are the same published rates you will find on our fleet page:

Worked examples, all figures including VAT:

• 4-hour morning trip, 4 anglers, Pearl 48: AED 2,600 for the boat, roughly AED 650 per person.
• 6-hour trip to the wrecks, 8 anglers, Sapphire 62: AED 4,500 for the boat, about AED 563 per person.
• 6-hour family day with 3 hours of fishing, 12 guests, Opal 70: AED 6,600 for the boat, about AED 550 per person.

Rod and tackle hire is typically AED 150 to 250 per rod for the trip, bait included. Weekends and public holidays carry a minimum booking length, usually 3 hours, and first-light slots in peak season fill up a week or more ahead.

• Cleaning and bagging of your catch before you step off

1. 1Take the earliest slot available — fish and wind are both kinder before 9 am.
2. 2Book 6 hours if wrecks are on your list. Four hours becomes a travel day.
3. 3Bring polarised sunglasses; the glare off the Gulf is brutal.
4. 4Wear soft, light-soled shoes. Deck shoes or bare feet, never black soles.
5. 5Keep cameras in a dry bag — spray happens on the run out.
6. 6Eat something before boarding. Fishing on an empty stomach and a rolling deck is a bad combination.
7. 7Let the crew set the drag. It is the single most common reason a good fish is lost.
8. 8If it is choppy, say so early — a captain can move you to sheltered ground.
9. 9Bring cash for a crew tip if the day goes well; it is customary here.
10. 10Book the swim stop. Even the serious anglers use it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fishing licence? Not as a guest. Licensed charter operators fish under their own permits, and we handle the paperwork.

Can beginners come? Yes. Most of our guests have never fished before. The crew rigs everything, sets the rods and coaches you through the first fight.

Can we keep what we catch? Yes, within UAE size and species rules. Out-of-season and undersized fish go back.

Are children allowed? Yes, with child life jackets and an adult per child on deck. A 4-hour inshore trip suits them far better than a long offshore run.

What happens if the weather turns? We move you to another slot or refund the trip. Nobody enjoys fishing in a 20-knot chop.

Can we do a night trip? Yes — squid and grouper fishing after dark works well from October to March, and the Marina skyline on the way in is worth the trip on its own.
