Dhow Cruise vs Private Yacht in Dubai Marina: Which One Is Right for You?
A shared dhow dinner cruise or a private yacht? An honest side-by-side look at price, privacy, food, route and who each option really suits in Dubai Marina.

Boat pricing and optional extras: Only soft drinks are included in the quoted boat price. Decoration, cake service, catering, bar packages, chefs, entertainment, photography/video, kids' activity packages, water activities and surprise arrangements are optional extras at an additional charge, subject to availability. Do not assume captain, crew, fuel, water, ice, towels or other services are included; request a complete itemised written quote before booking.
Stand on Marina Walk at about eight in the evening and you will see both: big wooden dhows strung with lights, moving slowly down the canal with a buffet on board, and smaller white yachts slipping past them towards the open sea. Both are "a cruise in Dubai Marina". They are very different evenings.
We get asked which one to book almost every week, often by people who have already looked at both and are confused by the price gap. This guide gives you the honest comparison, including the cases where a dhow is simply the better choice.
The short answer
- Choose a dhow cruise if you are one to four people on a budget, you want dinner included in one simple ticket, and you do not mind sharing the boat with other groups.
- Choose a private yacht if you are a group, you are celebrating something, you want to choose the time, the route and the music, or you want to leave the Marina and see Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis from the sea.
What a dhow cruise actually is
A dhow is a traditional wooden Arabian boat. In Dubai Marina most dhow cruises are shared dinner cruises: you buy a ticket per person, board at a set time, and the boat cruises slowly inside the Marina for around two hours while guests eat from a buffet. Many boats carry dozens to more than a hundred guests, and some have live entertainment.
It is a good-value, easy evening out, and the boats themselves are atmospheric. The trade-off is that you share the deck, the timing is fixed, and most dhows stay within the calmer water of the Marina rather than heading out along the coast.

What a private yacht charter is
With a private yacht you book the whole boat by the hour for your group only. You choose when to leave, how long to stay out and, within the safety rules, where to go. A typical route goes from Dubai Marina past JBR and Ain Dubai, out to the Palm Jumeirah and around to the front of Atlantis. You can stop for photos, swim when conditions allow, and play your own music.
Catering, decoration and other extras are optional and charged separately, so the price you see is for the boat. Soft drinks are included.
Side-by-side comparison
| Shared dhow cruise | Private yacht | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on board | Your group plus other guests | Only your group |
| How you pay | Per person ticket | Per hour for the whole boat |
| Timing | Fixed departure, usually evening | You choose, from 1 hour upwards |
| Route | Mostly inside Dubai Marina | Marina, JBR, Ain Dubai, Palm, Atlantis |
| Food | Buffet usually in the ticket | Optional catering at extra cost |
| Music and atmosphere | Set by the operator | Yours to choose |
| Swimming | Not usually | Possible when conditions allow |
| Best for | Couples, solo travellers, small budgets | Groups, birthdays, proposals, corporate |
Dhow ticket prices vary a lot by operator, season and menu, so compare a few current offers and check exactly what the ticket includes before you book.
What a private yacht costs in practice
The comparison usually comes down to group size. A dhow ticket is cheap for two people, but it is still a per-person price, while a yacht costs the same whether you bring five friends or fifteen. Here are our current hourly rates:
| Yacht | Guests | From (per hour) |
|---|---|---|
| Prestige 35 | up to 8 | AED 550 |
| Pearl 48 | up to 15 | AED 650 |
| Majesty 50 | up to 15 | AED 650 |
| Ammos 50 | up to 15 | AED 750 |
| Bella Vita 66 | up to 25 | AED 800 |
| Onyx 90 | up to 50 | AED 1,100 |
| Crown 90 | up to 50 | AED 1,800 |
Example 1: eight friends on the Prestige 35 for 2 hours: AED 1,100 for the boat, about AED 138 each.
Example 2: fifteen guests on the Pearl 48 for 2 hours: AED 1,300 for the boat, about AED 87 each.
Example 3: a couple on the Prestige 35 for 2 hours: AED 1,100, or AED 550 each. For two people on a tight budget, a dhow ticket will almost always be cheaper.
Remember to add any optional extras, such as catering, to the yacht total before you compare. Our cost per person guide shows how to work this out, and the hidden charges article lists what to ask about.
When a dhow cruise is the better choice
We would honestly point you to a dhow if:
- You are travelling alone or as a couple and want an inexpensive evening.
- You want dinner and the boat in one simple price without planning anything.
- You enjoy a busy, social atmosphere and entertainment.
- You are happy with a fixed time and a slow cruise inside the Marina.
When a private yacht is worth it
A private yacht makes more sense when:
- You are a group of six or more. Split between guests, the per-person cost often comes close to a dhow ticket, and you get the boat to yourselves. See our guide to a yacht party in Dubai.
- It is a special occasion. Birthdays, anniversaries and marriage proposals need privacy and control over the moment. See birthday yacht rental.
- You want the sea views. The skyline from beyond the Marina, Ain Dubai and the front of Atlantis are the views most people picture, and you only get them on a boat that goes out. Our Dubai Marina yacht tour describes the route.
- You want to choose the timing. A sunset cruise only works if you can leave at the right time for the season.
- It is work. Client evenings and team events need a private space. See corporate yacht charter.
Can you have dinner on a private yacht?
Yes. Catering can be arranged as an optional extra at an additional charge, from simple platters to a served dinner. If dinner is the main reason you are going out, read our yacht dinner cruise guide, which compares private dining with shared dhow dinners in more detail.
Questions to ask before you book either
- 1Is the boat shared or private?
- 2How long is the cruise on the water, not including boarding?
- 3Exactly what is included in the price, and what costs extra?
- 4Where does it board, and where does it actually go?
- 5What happens if the weather is bad?

Frequently asked questions
Is a dhow cruise cheaper than a yacht in Dubai?
For one or two people, yes. For groups of about six or more, a private yacht split between guests can cost a similar amount per person, before optional extras such as catering.
Does a dhow cruise go to Atlantis or the Palm?
Most shared dhow dinner cruises in Dubai Marina stay inside the Marina. Check the route with the operator. A private yacht can usually head out past Ain Dubai to the Palm and Atlantis.
Is food included on a private yacht?
No. Soft drinks are included in our boat price; catering is an optional extra at an additional charge.
Which is better for a birthday?
A private yacht, in most cases, because you control the music, timing and decoration, and the boat is only for your guests. Decoration and cake are optional extras charged separately.
How long should a private yacht cruise be?
Two hours is the most popular choice and is enough to see the Marina, Ain Dubai and the Palm. Three hours gives time to stop and swim.
